Some information about Vintgar Gorge

Vintgar Gorge is located closely to Lake Bled, in northwest of Slovenia. The gorge is 1600 meters long and can only be walked in one direction. It was formed by the mountain river Radovna

The gorge was discovered by Jakob Žumer and Benedikt Lergetporer in 1891, which were the mayor of Gorje and a photographer from Bled. By the time of 1893, the gorge was opened to the public. Nowadays, you can walk on the secured tourist trail on wooden pathways, but early on, it was a demanding and a very challenging undertaking

How to get to Vintgar Gorge?

The roads in Slovenia are pretty good and well marked, so the easiest way to reach this gorge is by car as we did. There is also a car park near the entrance of the entrance.

When we visited this place in September, there were already a lot of parking places occupied. A good thing to know is that there is a public toilet available at the parking, for free.

By car: You can find the parking lot near entrance of the gorge. The parking is free of charge.

With public transport: There is a bus that goes from Lake Bled all the way to Podhom where you need to walk for 25 minutes to the entrance. You can also go with the train, which leaves from lake Bled to the railway station of Podhom, which is a 15 minute hike.

By foot: If you’re up for an adventure, you can hike all the way from Lake Bled to Vintgar Gorge. This will take approximately 3 hours and is a hike of 10 kilometers.

When is the best time to visit Vintgar Gorge?

Slovenia is an all-year travel destination, but the peak season would be between June and August in the summer months. July is the busiest month in summer, because of the start of the summer vacation around Europe. The summer is so popular, because of the pleasant temperatures, and longer days. Just know that the gorge isn’t open at winter time.

After arriving at the car park, I walked to the entrance where I paid for a ticket. It’s also a good idea to book it online, so you don’t need to wait in line. This comes particularly in hand in the summertime when it’s very busy.

After paying for the ticket, it’s time to hike for about an hour, depending on how busy it is. This hike is a one-way hike, which means you need to hike all the way back to the car park for over an hour without seeing the gorge again. You can easily follow all the signs.

  • Car park: the price is €10 per car
  • Entrance ticket: €10 for adults and €7 for students
  • Opening hours: the gorge is open from 7.30 AM till 7 PM, but it’s best to check the website beforehand. The gorge is closed during the winter period.
